AFLW Defender Pepa Randall Joins Port Melbourne Chargers as Skills Coach, Drawn to the Club’s on and off Field Achievements in their First Year

Updated: Mar 17

The Port Melbourne Chargers have strengthened their coaching lineup ahead of their second season in the VAFA Women’s competition, announcing the appointment of recently retired AFLW defender Pepa Randall as the club’s new Skills Coach.

After a remarkable debut year in 2025, one in which the Chargers launched as VAFA’s newest women’s‑only club and saw both of their teams qualify for finals, the club has quickly become a standout destination for women’s football.  Pepa’s arrival builds on that foundation, supporting a program that places player development, connection, and growth at its core.

Pepa’s football journey is deeply connected to the rise of the AFLW. Selected in the inaugural AFLW draft in 2016, she announced her retirement ahead of the 2025 NAB AFLW season and finished her career with 62 AFLW games — placing her among the competition’s more experienced defenders.

Look back on some of Pepa Randall’s playing highlights when she achieved her 50‑game milestone with the GIANTS.

A Natural Fit: Pepa’s Experience Strengthens the Chargers’ Culture

Pepa heard about a new women’s‑only club in VAFA, that was established in just six weeks and they weren’t just finding their feet, both their teams made finals in their first season.

Pepa said her decision to join the Chargers was shaped by the strength of the club’s emerging culture:

“Across my career I’ve seen the difference between poor culture and great culture, and when I came down, met the coaches and players, and saw how connected and driven they were, I could feel what the club was building. It’s an environment where players genuinely grow, and that’s what made me want to be part of it.”

Pepa has previously reflected on the importance of culture on her way to 50 AFLW games.

known for:

Explosive closing speed

  • Strong intercept marking

  • Relentless one‑on‑one pressure

  • Clean ball use under pressure

  • A team‑first, high‑standards approach

Her leadership and ability to mentor younger players have become hallmarks of her career, qualities that make her a natural fit for a club focused on nurturing growth.

As Skills Coach, Pepa will focus on elevating fundamentals, sharpening decision‑making, and helping players at every level develop confidence and clarity in their game.

A Club Built on Culture, Connection, and Purpose

The Chargers’ rapid rise is grounded in a clear identity: a women’s football environment built on community, integrity, passion, respect, and excellence. Those values shaped their inaugural season and continue to guide their growth into year two.

Randall’s appointment strengthens that foundation and reinforces the Chargers’ commitment to providing high‑quality coaching and genuine development pathways for women and girls.

Director of Coaching, Harriet Cooper, said Pepa embodies the values and spirit the Chargers are committed to building.

“Not only does Pepa have an incredible depth of experience that she brings to our playing group, but she’s also one of the humblest and genuinely kind people you’ll meet. That really reflects the culture we’re building at Port Melbourne Chargers. Pepa has a great ability to guide our group while keeping everyone focused on the fundamental skills of the game, making sure every player continues to grow no matter their level of experience.”
