Welcome to the Port Melbourne Chargers Women’s Football Club.

We are building a club where women can play great football, develop as athletes and leaders, build lifelong connections and be part of something bigger than the game.

Whether you’re an experienced player, returning to football, moving into senior footy from juniors or considering playing for the first time, there is a place for you at the Chargers.

​

We are part of the Port Melbourne Pathway, connecting girls from junior football through to senior women’s football and opportunities beyond, including the VFLW pathway.

While girls played in mixed teams at Port Melbourne for many years — with several of today’s AFLW players beginning their football journey in those sides — dedicated girls’ and women’s teams first started in 2014. Since then the pathway has gone from strength to strength, and the launch of the Port Melbourne Chargers represents one of the most exciting chapters yet in the growth of women’s football in our community and the Port Melbourne Pathway.

 

Two Years In — and We’re Just Getting Started

The Chargers were established to create more than another women’s football team. We set out to build a premier destination for women’s football — a club known for excellence, innovation, belonging and community.

Our inaugural 2025 season laid the foundations.

In 2026, we raised the bar again.

Our Senior team finished the home-and-away season in the top three, defeated the competition’s leading teams late in the season, recorded the Chargers’ first finals victory and earned a place in the 2026 Premier B Women’s Grand Final.

But results are only part of the story.

What matters just as much is the environment we are creating — one where players are supported, challenged, valued and given the opportunity to be their best.

We know the real win is the culture we are building: one of belonging, belief and community.

And in 2027, we are taking another significant step forward.

In 2027 we are introducing Worth the Charge, our player health, wellbeing, injury-prevention and performance program.

Women deserve sporting environments designed with women in mind.

Worth the Charge brings together practical player screening, physiotherapy support, injury prevention, workload monitoring, GPS technology and performance insights to help us better understand and support our players throughout the season.

Our goal is simple:

Keep more women playing, help them stay healthy, support their performance and create an environment they choose to stay in.

It is another part of our commitment to continually improving what community women’s football can offer.

Developing Players — and Developing People

​

Football is only one part of what players can gain from being a Charger.

In our inaugural year we launched Charging Forward, our strengths-based leadership and development program bringing together players, coaches and club leaders to understand their individual and collective strengths.

The program helps build self-awareness, confidence, leadership capability and stronger teams — skills that extend well beyond football.

As the club grows, so will the opportunities we create for women to develop as players, coaches, leaders, volunteers and decision-makers in sport.

A Proud Port Melbourne Pathway

​

Girls have played football in Port Melbourne for decades, originally alongside boys in mixed teams, with a number progressing through those early teams into elite football.

Dedicated girls’ and women’s teams began in 2014 and the pathway has continued to grow ever since.

The establishment of the Port Melbourne Chargers created a dedicated senior destination within that pathway — helping girls see that there is somewhere for them to continue playing, developing and belonging as they move into senior football.

We want the next generation of girls coming through Port Melbourne to be able to see a clear pathway ahead of them — and women already playing the game to see the Chargers as a club where they can thrive.
