A Club is Born: Port Melbourne Chargers Featured in the Herald Sun

From Application to Announcement in Just Six Weeks

We’re excited to share that the Port Melbourne Chargers Women’s Football Club was featured in the Herald Sun last Sunday — celebrating the extraordinary launch of our club in just six short weeks.

At the start of 2025, the Chargers didn’t exist. Now, we're just one week away from running out onto JL Murphy Reserve for our first home games, marking a powerful new chapter for women’s sport in Port Melbourne.

The Journey So Far

Our rapid formation reflects a community hungry for opportunity, representation, and change. The Chargers were founded to complete the female football pathway in Port Melbourne — from Auskick, to Port Melbourne Colts Juniors, to the VFLW, and with our own senior women’s teams.

We’ve joined the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) with two teams ready to compete — right here, in our local community. We debuted our first home games on Saturday April 5th at JL Murphy Reserve, Williamstown Road, Port Melbourne.

More Than a Club — A Legacy in Motion

This club is about more than just football. It’s about belonging, community, and rising together. It’s about giving women and girls the platform they deserve — to play, to lead, and to inspire.

We’re here to build something lasting — a community-driven club that will elevate women in sport and spark pride across Port Melbourne.

In the Media

A huge thank you to Brayden May for capturing our story in the Herald Sun, and to Jason Edwards for the incredible photography.
